San Diego High School Basketball : Kearny Makes Free Throws to Beat Mira Mesa

Kearny High School took advantage of five second-period fouls Tuesday, making all six free throws, and went on to beat Mira Mesa, 69-65, in a nonleague game at Kearny.

Kearny (9-3) was 31 of 38 from the line.

Kearny’s Tim Garlin, who was 8 of 9 from the line, led all scorers with 20 points.

Tal Miller and Dave Lee had 11 points each for Mira Mesa.

In other boys’ nonleague games:

Point Loma 65, Hoover 57 (2 OT)--Sophomore Jim Griffith scored 8 of his 10 points in the overtime periods to lead Point Loma (7-6) to the come-from-behind victory. The Pointers trailed by 11 at the half and by 9 going into the fourth period, but steady rebounding in the second half boosted Point Loma. Mike Walker led Hoover (4-9) with 20 points.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE Grossmont 44, Helix 43--Helix (3-9, 0-5) rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter but couldn’t catch host Grossmont (5-6, 2-2), as Clifton Blevins of Helix missed a free-throw attempt with 12 seconds remaining. Grossmont’s Lance Williams led all scorers with 20 points. Robbie Ledford scored 11 points for Helix.

El Capitan 58, Granite Hills 48--El Capitan (1-3, 5-5) scored 10 of 14 from the line in the fourth period to pull ahead of host Granite Hills. Mike Chelsea was 5 of 7 from the line, including a 4 of 4 performance in the fourth period, for El Capitan. Eric Lozoya scored 18 points and Bryan Palmer added 16 for the Vaqueros. John Tenney paced Granite Hills with 20 points.

Santana 56, Monte Vista 52--Andy Heacock made two free throws with three seconds remaining as Santana (4-1, 8-4) beat Monte Vista (3-1, 6-3). The game’s final minutes were marred by numerous fouls and a bench-clearing fight that led to the ejection of Santana’s Tim Barry and Monte Vista’s Feliz Parra. Barry led all scorers with 18 points. Monte Vista’s was led by Socrates Hattox with 13 points, and Scott Winne and Wayne Hallman with 12 points each.

Mount Miguel 50, El Cajon 31--The Mount Miguel defense limited El Cajon to eight points in the first half. Haywood Mathis paced Mount Miguel (3-2, 3-5) with 12 points.

GIRLS

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Santana 53, Monte Vista 38--Leslie Ellis paced Santana with 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Sultans (9-3, 5-0) beat visiting Monte Vista. Melissa Smith of Monte Vista was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points. Barbara Bennett scored 13 points for Santana.

NONLEAGUE

Crawford 70, University of San Diego High 20--Karla Salmi scored 26 points and Carmella Hicks added 14 to pace Crawford (10-1). USDHS was held to two points in the final period.
