Officials of a Japanese university planning to open an American campus in Calabasas later this year said Thursday that they will hold an open house Sunday for their new neighbors.

About 100 families living in the rural area near the 230-acre Soka University campus at 26800 W. Mulholland Highway have been invited to the 11 a.m. event, said Yoshiaki Takada, spokesman for the Tokyo-based school.

Soka University purchased the site last July from the Church Universal and Triumphant for $15.5 million. The church left the property last month and relocated on a remote Montana ranch.

Soka University, which has an enrollment of about 5,200 in Japan, was founded in 1971 by Daisaku Ikeda, president of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist sect.

The purchase of the Calabasas property was coordinated by an American Buddhist group, Nichiren Shoshu of America.
