Weber Shoots for Biggest Bowling Payoff
Pete Weber finished ahead of the field after seven rounds of the $500,000 U.S. Open bowling tournament Friday night.
Weber, of St. Louis, will be the top-seeded player in today’s nationally televised finals (Channel 7, 3 p.m., delayed). The winner of the tournament, sponsored by Seagram’s, will earn $100,000--the biggest payoff in the history of the Professional Bowlers Assn.
Weber was 271 pins ahead of Del Ballard Jr. of Richardson, Tex., to earn the No. 1 spot in the championship round. Weber finished the 56-game format with a pinfall total of 13,227 and a 226 average. Ballard, a fifth-place finisher in last year’s U.S. Open, ended with a 12,956 total.
Ballard edged Ron Bell of Akron, Ohio, by five pins for the No. 2 position. Bell lost his final three match games and fell from second to third with 12,951.
Marshall Holman of Medford, Ore., finished fourth with 12,828, followed by Gary Dickinson, of Burleson, Tex., with 12,811.
