Homicide detectives Monday said they were investigating a Sunday-night shooting that left a 22-year-old Mexican man dead in Southeast San Diego.

Witnesses told police they found Doroteo Morales of Guerrero, Mexico, about 9 p.m. lying inside a house in the 3700 block of Euclid Avenue with a gunshot wound to the chest, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Acquaintances of the victim said they were taking Morales to a local hospital when he died.

After realizing that Morales was dead, they returned home with him in the back seat of the car to report the incident to police, Robinson said. However, police officers responding to a call of shots being fired in an alley behind the home were at the scene.

Police officers at the scene said they had found a bullet hole in a back door of the house and blood stains on the carpet before the dead man was brought back.

Police said they had no suspects in custody.
