OBITUARIES : Maury Stein; Music Store Operator

Share

Maury Stein, proprietor of a well-known Hollywood store popular as a gathering place for musicians and the brother of songwriter Jule Styne, died of a heart attack early Saturday in his Beverly Hills home. He was 76.

Stein, a musician himself, operated the M.K. Stein Music Co. in the 800 block of Vine Street in Hollywood for more than 40 years.

He played several woodwind instruments and appeared with a number of big-name bands, including those of David Rose and Spike Jones, before concentrating his energies on his store. A native of Chicago, he hobnobbed there as a young man with such celebrated music makers as Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa and Jimmy McPartland before moving here in the early 1940s, friends said.
