College Basketball Roundup : Iowa Rallies for an Overtime Victory at Illinois

Seeing isn’t believing for Iowa Coach Tom Davis.

Davis’ second-ranked Hawkeyes rallied from 22 points down in the second half and knocked off No. 8-ranked Illinois, 91-88, in overtime Wednesday night in a Big Ten Conference game at Champaign, Ill.

“I was literally speechless in the locker room afterward,” Davis said. “I just can’t believe we came back from 22, especially on the road.”

The Hawkeyes (16-0 overall, 4-0 in the Big Ten) were trailing, 61-39, with 16 minutes left, when the comeback started,

Iowa pulled even at 79-79 with two minutes left in regulation, and B.J. Armstrong’s 15-footer with 20 seconds left in overtime gave put the Hawkeyes ahead, 89-88.

Brad Lohas scored 23 points for Iowa, while Tony Wysinger had 34 for Illinois (12-3, 4-1) and Ken Norman added 23.

North Carolina 95, Virginia 80--Kenny Smith scored 19 points and the third-ranked Tar Heels turned back the Cavaliers in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Charlottesville, Va.

The Tar Heels (14-1, 3-0) won their 12th straight game and avenged an 86-73 at Charlottesville last season when North Carolina was 21-0 and ranked No. 1.

Andrew Kennedy scored 21 points for Virginia (9-4, 1-2).

Pitt 87, Seton Hall 85--Demetreus Gore scored 18 points, including six free throws in the final minutes to carry the No. 18 Panthers past the Pirates in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

Charles Smith put Pitt (12-3, 3-1) ahead for good, 83-81, on a layup with 1:12 to play. It was 85-84 when Gore made two free throws with 12 seconds left.

James Major scored 30 points for Seton Hall (10-4, 1-4).

Purdue 86, Minnesota 59--Doug Lee scored 19 points and the sixth-ranked Boilermakers retained first place in the Big Ten by trouncing the Gophers at West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermakers (13-1, 5-0), enjoying their best season since 1938, beat Minnesota (9-5, 2-2) for the seventh straight time.

Auburn 66, Tennessee 56--Jeff Moore scored 14 points, including the go-ahead basket, as the 10th-ranked Tigers scored 12 straight points in the stretch to overcome the Volunteers at Auburn, Ala.

Moore’s basket with 2:58 remaining gave Auburn (10-2, 3-1), a 58-56 lead with 2:58 left.

Tony White scored 16 points for the Volunteers (8-5, 2-2).

Duke 85, Maryland 61--Danny Ferry had 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the No. 14 Blue Devils overwhelmed the Terrapins in an ACC game at College Park, Md.

The Blue Devils (12-2, 2-1) rebounded from a loss to North Carolina with its fifth straight victory over Maryland (3-5, 0-4).

Navy 75, Lafayette 71--David Robinson collected 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the No. 19 Midshipmen to a victory over the Leopards at Easton, Pa.
