College Basketball Roundup : Seton Hall Upsets Georgetown for Second Time on 2 Free Throws by Bryant, 66-65

Seton Hall upset No. 9 Georgetown for the second time in two weeks Saturday as Mark Bryant hit two free throws with six seconds remaining for a 66-65 Big East victory at East Rutherford, N.J.

Seton Hall, a 74-53 winner over Georgetown at Landover, Md. Jan. 3, has handed the Hoyas (12-2) their only losses of the season. The Hoyas are 3-2 in conference play.

The Pirates (11-4 and 2-4) grabbed a 64-61 lead with 2:02 remaining on a 19-footer by James Major. But Mark Tillmon scored a goal and Bobby Winston stole the ball from John Morton and threw it downcourt for a Reggie Williams jam, putting the Hoyas ahead 65-64 with 24 seconds to go.

Williams then fouled Bryant, who made good on the one-and-one situation. Bryant, a 6-9 senior, finished as the Pirates’ top scorer with 22 points.

Georgetown had one last shot, but Tillmon’s jumper bounced off the rim.

Williams, who had only seven points in the first meeting between the teams, came through with 28 points, including 16 in the second half. Tillmon had 14 points and Perry McDonald 12.

For Seton Hall, Morton finished with 16 points and Ramon Ramos, who was scoreless in the first half, had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Seton Hall Coach P.J. Carlesimo called the win more satisfying than the first.

“My opinion is if we lost today, people wouldn’t believe we’re a good team. We’re a good team,” Carlesimo said. “This game was a better win than at the Capital Centre. We were challenged today.”

St. John’s 69, Connecticut 54--Shelton Jones had 18 points and 8 rebounds for the No. 13 Redmen who continued their domination of the Huskies at Hartford, Conn.

It was the third straight victory for St. John’s, which has beaten Connecticut in their last 13 meetings dating back five years.

The Redmen improved to 12-2 and 3-2, while the Huskies fell to 6-8 and 1-4.

St. John’s outrebounded Connecticut, 44-30, and held the Huskies’ leading scorer, Cliff Robinson, to five points. Robinson hit only 2 of 13 shots before fouling out.

Providence 81, Boston College 71--The Friars prevailed at Providence, R.I., even though leading scorers Delray Brooks and Billy Donovan were held scoreless in the first half and wound up with a total of only 14 points.

Boston College got as close as six points with 2:15 left when Skip Barry hit an 18-footer to make it 74-68. Donovan then converted four free throws to seal the Friars’ third straight conference win.

The Friars are 12-3 and 3-2, the Eagles 7-7 and 0-4.

Virginia 88, Villanova 59--Andrew Kennedy had 23 points and 7 rebounds and Richard Morgan had 18 points for the Cavaliers who thoroughly dominated the game after taking an 8-0 lead at Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (10-4) now has won 56 of 57 games at home against non-Atlantic Coast Conference teams.

Harold Jensen, with 12 points, was the only player to score in double figures for Villanova (10-6).

Navy 96, American 60--David Robinson had 31 points (11 of 15 shots), 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for the Middies in the Colonial Athletic Assn. game at Annapolis, Md.

American’s Frank Ross, who entered the game with a 24.9 average, was limited to 12 points. He was 3 for 16 from the free throw line.

Clemson 72, Maryland 64--Michael Tait and Michael Brown each had 16 points for the No. 12 Tigers who remained unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C.

Clemson (16-0 and 3-0) is off to its best start ever in ACC play. Maryland (3-6 and 0-5) was led by Steve Hood with 20 points, followed by Dave Dickerson and Derrick Lewis with 15 each.

Vanderbilt 91, Auburn 75--Freshman guard Scott Draud scored a career-high 23 points and junior center Will Perdue added 22 as the Commodores stunned the 10th-ranked Tigers in a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt (11-6 and 3-3) fell behind 11-2 at the start but took the lead for good, 36-34, on a three-point shot by Barry Goheen with 2:32 in the first half.

Auburn closed to 53-49 in the second half, but Vanderbilt turned back the challenge with a 7-0 spurt.

Chris Morris had 23 points and Mike Jones had 15 points for Auburn (10-3 and 3-2).

Alabama 71, Mississippi 62--Jim Farmer scored 24 points at Oxford, Miss. as the No. 15 Crimson Tide remained unbeaten in the SEC.

Alabama (13-2 and 6-0) trailed, 49-44, with 9:48 left in the game, but scored 15 straight points to take a 59-49 lead with 4:50 remaining.

Rod Barnes scored 19 points for Ole Miss (8-6 and 1-4).

Florida 97, Tennessee 90--Vernon Maxwell scored 30 points and Chris Capers, in his first start, had 20 for the Gators who overcame a 46-37 halftime deficit at Gainesville, Fla.

Florida (13-4 and 5-1) shot 67% in the second half, with Maxwell scoring 17 points and Capers 12.

Tennessee (8-6 and 2-3) was led by Doug Roth with 27 points and Fred Kenkins with 25. Tony White of the Vols, the SEC’s leading scorer, was held to nine points.

DePaul 81, South Florida 55--The unbeaten Blue Demons put the game away with a 14-0 blitz after South Florida closed to 41-38 in the second half at Rosemont, Ill.

Kevin Edwards scored 18 points and Rod Strickland and Dallas Comegys had 14 each for DePaul (14-0).

Darrell Coleman had 16 points for South Florida (5-8).

West Virginia 57, Notre Dame 55--J.J. Crawl sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to clinch the victory for the Mountaineers at South Bend, Ind.

Crawl had 15 points for West Virginia (11-3), while Mark Stevenson had 15 for Notre Dame (9-4).

West Virginia led 24-16 at halftime after scoring eight unanswered points late in the half, four of them by Crawl.

Indiana 95, Northwestern 43--In a Big Ten mismatch, the No. 4 Hoosiers stormed to a 33-6 lead over the Wildcats with 6:23 left in the first half at Bloomington, Ind.

It was the 11th straight win for Indiana (14-1 and 5-0) and the ninth straight loss for Northwestern (5-11 and 0-6).

Daryl Thomas lad Indiana with 18 points. Steve Alford, bothered by a cold, scored 11 points and became the Big Ten’s eighth all-time leading scorer with 2,019 points. He passed Ohio State’s Herb Williams (2,011) and Michigan State’s Greg Kelser (2,014).

Illinois 80, Minnesota 58--Ken Norman had 27 points and 12 rebounds for the No. 10 Illini at Champaign, Ill.

Illinois (13-3 and 5-1) took a 35-24 halftime lead and then stayed in command after fighting off an early second-half rally by the Gophers (9-6 and 2-3).

Ohio State 81, Wisconsin 66--Dennis Hopson, the nation’s second leading scorer, had 30 points and 13 rebounds as the Buckeyes (11-6 and 2-3) routed the Badgers (10-9 and 0-6) at Columbus, Ohio.

Trent Jackson, hitting seven 3-pointers, scored 26 points for Wisconsin.

Utah 93, San Diego State 65--Albert Springs, hitting all seven of his shots from the field, scored 23 points and Mitch Smith had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Utes in a Western Athletic Conference game at Salt Lake City.

Springs also held San Diego State’s leading scorer, Tony Ross, to 12 points, 6 below his average.

Utah is 12-5 and 4-2, San Diego State 2-14 and 0-6.

BYU 75, Hawaii 69--Mike Smith exploded for 10 points in 90 seconds as the Cougars outscored the Rainbows, 17-4, to take a 75-69 lead with four minutes left at Provo, Utah.

Jeff Chatham had 29 points for the league-leading Cougars (13-6 and 5-1). Smith had 14, with 12 coming in the second half.

Chris Gaines had 20 points for the Rainbows (5-12 and 0-6).

Missouri 87, Oklahoma State 77--Derrick Chievous scored 29 points and Lynn Hardy added 20 for the Tigers who jumped to a 10-0 lead and never trailed in the Big Eight game at Columbia, Mo.

Missouri is 12-6 and 2-0, Oklahoma State 4-11 and 0-2.

Kansas State 68, Iowa State 65--Norris Coleman had 24 points as the Wildcats (12-3 and 2-0) turned back the Cyclones (9-6 and 1-1) at Manhattan, Kan.

Iowa State’s Jeff Grayer, who scored 23 points, had six straight points down the stretch to get the Cyclones within 66-65 with 25 seconds to play. But Mitch Richmond dropped in a pair of free throws for Kansas State, and a final three-point effort by Iowa State’s Sam Hill missed the mark.

Houston 60, Arkansas 55--Rolando Ferreira and Randy Brown each hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds as the Cougars held off the Razorbacks in a Southwest Conference game at Houston.

Houston, winning its fifth straight game, improved to 10-3 and 3-0, while Arkansas dropped to 11-7 and 2-3.

Houston’s Greg Anderson led all scorers with 21 points.

Texas 61, SMU 60--Patrick Fairs scored a three-point play with 15 seconds remaining and the Longhorns held on to turn back the Mustangs at Austin, Tex.

The loss was the Mustangs’ fifth straight, with two of those coming in overtime and the other three decided in the final seconds by a total of 7 points. The last four of those losses have come in SWC play, marking the first time in 34 years the Mustangs have dropped their first four league games.

Fairs scored 22 points, 17 in the second half, and freshman Travis Mays had 20 points for Texas (9-9 and 2-3).

Carlton McKinney had 21 points for SMU (8-7 and 0-4).
