Purdue football Coach Fred Akers says Jeff George, the team’s starting quarterback as a freshman last year, followed bad advice when he decided to leave the Boilermakers.

George, who set national high school records for attempts and completions, said he expects to decide this week where he will transfer. The Miami Herald reported Monday that George would attend Miami of Florida.

“He got some incredibly poor advice about his career and his decision,” Akers, who took over Purdue last month, said during a news conference. “I kind of inherited the situation. It wasn’t a lot of fun. I’ve never had a player transfer before and I don’t want to have any more.

“He’s not a polished quarterback. He needs help like anybody else. I offered him a chance for that.”
