Australian Open Tennis : Last 3 American Men Lose; So Does Shriver

The last three Americans in men’s singles fought gamely today before being ousted in the fourth round of the $1.65-million Australian Open, and Sweden’s Catarina Lindqvist upset third-seeded Pam Shriver in women’s singles.

Lindqvist, seeded No. 10, beat Shriver, 6-3, 6-1, to join No. 1 Martina Navratilova, No. 2 Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia and No. 5 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany in the semifinals.

Navratilova defeated No. 7 Zina Garrison, 6-3, 6-0; Mandlikova routed No. 8 Lori McNeil, 6-0, 6-0, and Kohde-Kilsch struggled past Elizabeth Smylie of Australia, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Lindqvist will meet Navratilova, and Mandlikova will face Kohde-Kilsch.

The Americans who were ousted in men’s singles were Paul Annacone, Tim Wilkison and Derrick Rostagno.

Pat Cash of Australia, seeded 11th, fought off Annacone, 6-4, 6-1, 6-7, 1-6, 6-2; third-seeded Yannick Noah of France rallied to beat Wilkison, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and New Zealand’s Kelly Evernden defeated Rostagno, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

Second-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany was scheduled to meet Wally Masur of Australia today in the final men’s fourth-round match.

On Monday, No. 1 Ivan Lendl defeated Dan Goldie, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3; No. 6 Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia beat Mark Kratzmann of Australia, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2; No. 4 Stefan Edberg of Sweden ousted No. 13 Robert Seguso, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 9 Anders Jarryd of Sweden stopped Peter Doohan of Australia, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.

In the quarterfinals, Lendl will meet Jarryd, Edberg will take on Mecir, Noah will face Cash, and Evernden will play the winner of Becker-Masur.

Wilkison appeared ready to repeat his U.S. Open victory over Noah, but the Frenchman played superbly in the final three sets.

“I was really happy with the way I played,” Noah said. “For the first time, I felt I could play on grass.”

Cash’s victory took the fiery right-hander 3 hours.
