An elderly resident of Premier Manor Retirement Home in El Cajon allegedly attacked three women residents with a cane and a knife-sharpener in an apparently unprovoked dinner-time incident Wednesday.

None of the women was seriously injured. Rose Rozenfeld, 80, who received three scalp cuts, was treated at Grossmont Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Sharon Ross said.

Lillian Neben, 86, and Frada Sampson, 80, were in stable condition at AMI Valley Medical Center with bumps, bruises and cuts to the head and face, a spokeswoman said. They were under observation to decide whether they should be released.

Police said they arrested 73-year-old Bernard Nass, a resident of the retirement home, in connection with the attack. Nass was booked into a hospital unit of the County Jail on suspicion of three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, said Lt. James Davis.

Davis said that about 5:45 p.m., Nass allegedly went to Neben’s room and attacked her with his cane, striking her several times. He then went to the home’s dining area, where he allegedly attacked Rozenfeld and Sampson with a metal knife sharpener.

Residents of the home detained Nass until police arrived, Davis said.

The attack was apparently unprovoked. “To the best of my knowledge, there were no arguments and nothing that preceded the attack” at the home at 655 S. Mollison Ave., Davis said.
