Share

The California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. has changed its name--again. Now it wants to be called the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.

The conference was originally called the Southern California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn., but when Stanford joined the conference eight years ago the “SC” was changed to “C.” The latest change was made to placate Hawaii, which is in its fourth year as a member of the conference.

Whatever it’s called, the conference is known as the best in college volleyball. SCIVA, CIVA and WIVA teams have won all 17 NCAA championships and the top three ranked teams in the country in this year’s preseason polls--Pepperdine, UCLA and USC--are members of the conference.

CSUN loses assistant: Tim Collins is no longer a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Cal State Northridge. Collins, a former CSUN player, left the team last week. No reason was given for his departure. He was an assistant at Granada Hills High and coach at Pierce College before joining Northridge’s program this fall.

Snake River sprint: Kennedy High graduate Phyllis Manigault, a junior at Idaho State, was named Mountain West Conference athlete of the week after sprinting to second-place finishes in both the 55-and 300-meter races at the Snake River TAC Meet at Idaho State on Saturday.

Manigault ran 55 meters in 7.36 seconds and 300 meters in 40.5 as the women’s indoor track team finished third in the seven-team meet. Manigault’s time in the 300-meter event was just .16 seconds off the school record in the Bengals’ second meet of the 1987 indoor season.

Things could be better: Stanford All-American pitcher Jack McDowell, who during the Christmas holidays was the victim of an assault that left him with more than 200 stitches in his face, suffered a pinched nerve in his knee that caused him to miss some practice. The 6-5, 185 right-hander is expected to be ready for his 1987 hometown debut when the Cardinal play at Cal State Fullerton on February 6.

McDowell was the Southern Section Player of the Year at Notre Dame High in 1984.
