Women’s College Basketball : CS Long Beach Women Bury UCSB, 105-25

The Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team, ranked fifth in the country, jumped out to a 40-0 lead and beat UC Santa Barbara, 105-25, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Goleta.

The Gauchos broke their scoring drought on two free throws by Patti Niichel with 4:27 left in the half. Long Beach (18-1 overall, 8-0 in the PCAA) led, 54-9, at halftime. Senior forward Cindy Brown scored 23 points to lead Long Beach, which has won 18 straight.

Niichel had seven points for Santa Barbara (4-13, 1-8.

Washington 77, UCLA 64--Traci Thirdgill scored 16 points and Hilary Recknor added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies to the Pacific 10 Conference win in Seattle.

UCLA (11-7, 4-4) trailed at intermission, 42-33, but opened the second half with a 12-2 streak in the first four minutes to take a 45-44 lead. However, Washington (15-3, 7-1) responded with an 8-0 run, and the Bruins, who committed 23 turnovers on the night, never led again.

Dora Dome had 18 points and Michele Wootton 16 for UCLA.

USC 95, Washington State 55--Rhonda Windham scored 22 points and had 9 assists to lead the Trojans at the Sports Arena. Cherie Nelson added 20 points and 13 rebounds for USC (13-5, 7-1). The Cougars fell to 7-10 and 0-8.
