Last Seeded Player Ousted at Braemar
Fourth-seeded Kim Steinmetz of St. Louis, the lone holdover from the original top eight singles players, was eliminated by Clare Wood of Great Britain, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in a quarterfinal match of a U.S. Tennis Assn. women’s tournament Friday.
In other matches at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana, Digna Ketelaar of the Netherlands defeated Maureen Drake of Canada, 7-6, 6-1; Melissa Brown of Scarsdale, N.Y., defeated Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-4; and Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union defeated Shandra Livingston of Carson, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles quarterfinals, Sue Rendo, a former four-time All-American at USC, and Ei Iida of Japan defeated ex-Trojans Cheryl Jones and Rochelle Morrison, 6-4, 6-2; Cinda Gurney of Palos Verdes and Amy Frazier of Rochester, Minn., defeated Celia Fernandez of Torrance and Themis Zambrzychi of Woodland Hills, 6-1, 6-3; Natlie Bykova (injured leg) and Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union defaulted to Karen Dewis of Canada and Lynn Lewis of San Diego; and Carol Christian (who was ill) and Lindsay Bartlett of Portola Valley, Calif., defaulted to Dee Ann Hansel of Rosewell, Ga., and Jennifer Goodling of York, Pa.
A semifinal match was moved to Friday. Lewis and Dewis defeated Hansel and Goodling, 6-4, 6-2.
