Womens’ College Basketball : McCoy’s 20 Points Lead No. 1 Pomona Over Chapman

Senior Michelle McCoy scored 20 points and had 11 assists to lead Cal Poly Pomona to an 80-56 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball victory over Chapman Saturday at Pomona.

McCoy scored 10 points and passed for 5 assists in the first nine minutes of the game as the Broncos, ranked first in the NCAA Division II, gained a 30-8 lead. Chapman scored the next eight points and closed the gap to 10 (40-30) at the half but never got closer.

Debra Larsen added 18 points for Pomona and Niki Bracken scored 16. The victory was the Broncos’ 17th straight and improved their record to 6-0 in the CCAA and 19-1 overall.

Susan Bergendahl scored 10 points to lead Chapman (4-2, 11-9).

Cal State Fullerton 72, UOP 66--Cathi Hall came off the bench to score 16 points and lead the Titans (3-4, 7-10) to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Stockton.

Amy Torczon made two free throws with 5:54 left to give Fullerton a 54-52 lead. UOP was never able to regain the lead. Torczon finished with 14 points.

Gretchen Meinhardt, from Edison High School, led UOP with 24 points.

Washington 73, USC 61--The Huskies took over first place in the Pacific 10 with a 73-61 victory over USC at Seattle, Washington’s 39th straight regular-season win at home.

Washington (8-1 in conference, 16-3 overall) was led by Lisa Oriard with 21 points. Cherie Nelson had 17 points to lead USC (13-6, 7-2).

CS Long Beach 79, Fresno State 78--The 49ers survived a scare, coming from behind to defeat the Bulldogs in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Fresno.

Fresno State led for most of the game until Shameil Coleman’s three-point play gave Long Beach its first lead at 77-74 with 2:17 remaining. Fresno State closed to within one at 77-76 but Penny Toler made two free throws with 28 seconds left to seal the victory.

When the teams met earlier this season, Long Beach won, 114-70.

UCLA 67, Washington State 63--Dora Dome had 25 points to lead the Bruins to a Pac-10 victory over the Cougars at Pullman, Wash.

UCLA is 4-4 in conference, 11-7 overall. Washington State is 0-8, 7-10.

Hawaii 57, UC Irvine 47--Bryna Jones scored 12 points to lead the Rainbows (7-3, 15-4) to the victory at Honolulu.
