SPORTS SHORTS : RECORD BOOK

John Brown, Whitney High School--Now an assistant basketball coach at the college prep school, Brown led the CIF Southern Section in scoring in 1983, the only season he played basketball for Whitney. His mark of 712 points was accomplished in only 23 games. Senior guard Alex Ahn is bearing down on Brown’s record, but it has taken him three seasons and 59 games on the varsity to total 686 points.

BASKETBALL Darrick Martin, St. Anthony High School--Cal-Hi Sports, a publication that follows California high schools, describes the Saints’ junior point guard as “another (player) on the rise.” In a description of some of the top underclassmen in the state, the publication says Martin “is having a tremendous junior season.” Martin has scored more than 30 points in a game several times this season and once had a career-high 41.

Roger Stone, University of Redlands--The Times All-Southeast selection from La Serna High School is seeing plenty of playing time with the Bulldogs. He contributed five steals and six assists off the bench last week to spark Redlands to a 64-61 win over Cal Poly Pomona. He is one of three freshmen Coach Gary Smith uses on a regular basis.

Christine Carroll, California High School--Although she averages 16.2 rebounds and 14 points a game, the 6-foot-2 center has not received much attention from four-year colleges. The senior spent a portion of last summer playing basketball in Hong Kong and also attended several basketball camps in an effort to polish her skills. She hopes to play at a college where she can study for a career in sports medicine.

Paul Horn--The former Cypress College player has left the University of Mississippi basketball program and has enrolled at Biola University in La Mirada. At Biola, the 6-foot-8 center joins two former Charger teammates--guard Jeff Martineau and center Scott Swanner. Martineau is a starting guard this season. Swanner, formerly of Whittier Christian High School, is redshirting.

BASEBALL George Lazalde, Golden West College--The sophomore is a starting outfielder at the community college in Huntington Beach. He batted .315 a year ago and was a second-team All-South Coast Conference choice. As a college freshman, he was second on the team with 14 extra-base hits. Golden West is expected to challenge for the conference title. “We . . . have worked this team pretty hard,” Rustler Coach Fred Hoover said, “and we feel this team will play .700 ball as in years past.” Cerritos and Compton colleges are also members of the South Coast Conference. Lazalde is a graduate of Glenn High School in Norwalk.

SOCCER Sean McQuown, Valley Christian High School--The standout player broke an arm last week in a soccer match and was hospitalized for a brief period. He will be out of athletic competition for the remainder of the school year, including the soccer and baseball seasons. In football, McQuown was named state Division III Player of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports for his steady performances as a wide receiver, kicker and defensive back. The Crusaders won the Southern Section’s Inland Conference football title.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK Eleanor Dykstra, Valley Christian High School--The Crusader girls basketball coach explained her reservations about being the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section 1-A Division: “When you go through the first round of league and win so easily as we did, it is hard to tell the players that they might be doing something wrong.”
