SAN FRANCISCO — Mary McKinney, believed to be the oldest survivor of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, has died at age 113.
Mrs. McKinney died Monday in her room at the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Francisco, her home for the last year.
She said last year that she was “in bed with my hubby,” James, when the earthquake struck.
“We had to cook in the gutter for quite a while,” she said. “We slept on blankets on the ground, and the worst of it was we couldn’t change clothes, couldn’t wash. We were lucky to get water.”
Born in Sacramento, Mrs. McKinney grew up in Oakland and danced in theaters there before moving to San Francisco.
