Pacific 10 Roundup : Oregon State Cashes In a Long Shot, Keeps Share of Lead, 64-63

Bill Sherwood’s three-point shot with two seconds left gave Oregon State a 64-63 victory over Oregon Thursday night at Eugene, Ore., keeping the Beavers tied with UCLA for the Pacific 10 Conference lead.

Oregon State (18-4 overall, 10-3 in the Pac-10) never led until Sherwood’s basket.

Oregon (13-10, 7-7) had a 63-55 lead with 39 seconds left, but Eric Knox and Gary Payton hit 3-point baskets to cut the lead to 63-61.

Sherwood and Jose Ortiz each scored 21 points for the Beavers. Sven Meyer had 17 for Oregon.

California 70, Washington 68--Reserve Jeff Huling sank a 17-footer with 22 seconds left and the Bears survived a wild finish to beat the Huskies at Seattle.

Huling’s basket gave Cal (15-11, 8-6) a 70-66 lead. Washington’s Kevin Vidato scored with eight seconds left, but officials ruled he was fouled before the shot.

Vidato missed his free throw, but Christian Welp stole the rebound from Huling and scored to make it 70-68. Cal broke Washington’s press and ran out the clock.

Welp scored 27 points for the Huskies (13-11, 7-6).

Washington State 74, Stanford 64--Freshman guard Reco Rowe scored 24 points in his first college start, lifting the Cougars past the Cardinal at Spokane, Wash.

Rowe hit 6 of 7 shots and scored 16 points in the first half, taking the Cougars (8-14, 4-9) to a 40-29 lead.

Todd Lichti had 19 points for Stanford (12-11, 6-8).
