The pilot of a single-engine plane was killed in a crash in a remote canyon near Newhall, rescuers confirmed Sunday.

The pilot, Frank Cornelius Bernadic, 35, of Visalia, was the only person aboard the plane, authorities said.

A private helicopter pilot flying over the area contacted authorities after spotting pieces of the plane one-half mile north of the Golden State Freeway and just east of the Antelope Valley Freeway about 9:45 a.m., said Sgt. John Andrews, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The plane, registered to Bernadic, was identified as a six-seat, single-engine Cessna 180, but its flight plan was not known, and authorities did not know when the plane went down, Andrews said.

The crash site was inaccessible from the ground.

Officials for the National Transportation Safety Board responded to the site to begin their investigation into the cause of the crash, Andrews said. They could not be reached for comment Sunday.
