Pacific 10 Roundup : Thompson’s 3-Pointer Pushes Arizona State Past Washington

Bobby Thompson hit a three-point shot with 19 seconds left to cap a wild comeback and give Arizona State a 71-70 win over Washington Thursday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (9-14 overall, 5-10 in the Pac-10) was trailing, 40-33, at halftime and was behind, 53-41, with 12 minutes left. But the Sun Devils scored 15 straight points to take a 56-53 lead. Thompson hit a three-pointer to make it 54-53, and Mark Carlino’s layup with 7:18 left capped the surge.

Washington (14-12, 8-7) came back to take a 70-66 lead on Chris Welp’s three-point play with 34 seconds left.

Arizona State’s Steve Beck sank two free throws with 24 seconds left to make it 70-68 and set the stage for Thompson’s shot.

Beck and Thompson had 18 points each for the Sun Devils, and Welp scored 28 for Washington.

Arizona 84, Washington State 58--Craig McMillan scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats past the Cougars at Tucson.

The Cougars (8-16, 4-11) trailed most of the game but pulled within 47-43 on Dwayne Scholten’s three-point play with 12:10 left. Arizona (16-9, 11-4) ran off 12 straight points to break it open.

Joe Wallace scored 19 points for the Cougars, and Tom Tolbert added 15 for Arizona.
