COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN, Balfanz Breeze to 6-2 Win

Jeremy Hernandez allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings and John Balfanz drove in a pair of runs as visiting Cal State Northridge breezed to a 6-2 nonconference victory Friday over San Diego State.

The Matadors were ahead, 6-0, in the fifth when Hernandez (3-1) staggered slightly and gave up both San Diego State runs. CSUN scored twice in the first, once in the second and three times in the fourth.

BASEBALL

Long Beach City 7, Canyons 6; Harbor 6, Canyons 5--Defending Stengel Tournament champion Canyons lost in the ninth inning in each game of the double-elimination tournament. Canyons is 2-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 82, Chaffey 43--Jeannie Washington led Valley with 19 points and teammates Dametra Johnson, Maryjo Testa and Bernadette Tillis each had 10 to lead the Monarchs in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at home. Each of Valley’s 10 players scored in the team’s final game.

SOFTBALL

Cal Poly Pomona 4, CS Northridge 0; CS Northridge 6, Chapman 1--Pomona scored one run in the fourth and three more in the seventh to back Rhonda Wheatley’s no-hitter against CSUN (3-3) in the Cal State Bakersfield tournament.

Northridge defeated Chapman as Lisa Martin tossed a three-hitter in her first outing of the season. It was Northridge’s first game against an opponent from its own division. Northridge scored one run in the third, two in the fifth and put the game out of reach with three in the sixth.

Moorpark 3, Mt. San Antonio College 0--Sophomore Karen Mead pitched a no-hitter, struck out 13 and walked 2 for Moorpark (1-2) in a nonconference game at Mount San Antonio College.
