PCAA Roundup : New Mexico State Defeats Long Beach

Senior guard Kenny Travis scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead New Mexico State to an 84-75 victory over Cal State Long Beach State Monday night at Las Cruces, N.M.

The Aggies, playing their third game in five days, raised their record to 15-13 overall and 9-8 in the conference. The 49ers dropped to 12-16, 7-9.

Travis, playing in the final home game of his college career, finished strong with 20 second-half points.

The Aggies took a commanding 70-48 lead with 7:08 left in the game with an 11-0 spurt. Long Beach narrowed the lead with five three-point field goals in the final minutes.

Junior forward John Hoffman led the 49ers with 16 points, while sophomore forward John Hatten added 12.

Keith Hill had 12 points for the Aggies.

Travis’ 11 rebounds helped New Mexico State to a 41-33 rebounding edge.

The Aggies shot 44% in the first half to take a 41-32 halftime lead. New Mexico State shot 49% for the game, and Long Beach hit 44% .

New Mexico State, coming off an 80-69 loss to No. 1-ranked Nevada Las Vegas on Saturday, jumped to an 8-0 lead Monday night and never trailed.

San Jose State 49, Fresno State 48--Guard Ricky Berry scored 17 points, and forward Reggie Owens grabbed 11 rebounds and had 5 assists as the Spartans held on at San Jose.

San Jose State improved to 12-13 and 8-8. Fresno State fell to 8-18, 3-12.

Fresno forward Jervis Cole led the Bulldogs with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Berry started the scoring with a dunk, and the Spartans held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.
