Norwalk : Dispute Over Street Names

Share

The City Council has referred a proposal to revise the policy on naming streets to a city commission for recommendations.

Since the 1960s, officials said, the city has followed an informal policy of naming new streets after Norwalk residents who were killed in the Vietnam War.

The council tabled the matter Monday when members could not agree on whether to adopt a new policy to name public streets after former City Council members or to include deceased veterans of other wars.

Councilman Cecil Green said the old policy was “antiquated” and needed to be revised to include veterans who fought and died in other wars. But Councilwoman Grace Napolitano said the policy should remain unchanged.
