Council Urges Fullerton to Drop Water Polo, Tennis

The Cal State Fullerton Athletic Council has recommended that the school drop water polo and men’s tennis in order to channel funds from those programs into other areas of the athletic department, Ed Carroll, Fullerton athletic director, said Wednesday.

The council’s recommendation is expected to be approved by Fullerton President Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb.

Carroll said the council based its decision on the fact that limited resources have made it impossible to maintain continuity of coaches in water polo and men’s tennis, and said those funds could be put to better use.

“What we’ve experienced in both those sports is a high turnover in coaching because both are staffed on a part-time basis,” Carroll said. “It’s been unfair to the student athletes involved to have a revolving-door situation in which they have a new coach each year.”

The men’s tennis team is 3-5 this season, and was 2-22 last season. The water polo team has been winless in 20 conference games over the last two seasons and has compiled a 12-37-1 overall record.
