HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL : Cooper Leads Simi Valley to Quarterfinals

Simi Valley High, behind Paula Cooper’s game-high 22 points, defeated Huntington Beach, 66-50, in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs at Huntington Beach on Wednesday night. The win was the 15th straight for Simi Valley, which plays Morningside, an 83-54 victor over Lakewood, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Julie Arlotto scored 17 points and Kristie Sterbens and Dani Elton had eight points each for Simi Valley (23-3), the Marmonte League champion.

The Pioneers used a full court press to outscore Huntington Beach, 19-7, in the third quarter, after being tied, 24-24, at halftime. Simi Valley made 16 of 22 free throws.

Stefanie Pemper scored a team-high 14 points for Huntington Beach (13-12).

Southern Section

3-A DIVISION

Louisville 65, Burbank 55--Andrea Knapp scored a game-high 25 points and Lynn Flanagan added 20 for Louisville in the second round game at Burbank. Kristin Carpenter, who averaged three points per game this season, gave Louisville a big lift with nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Tina Kohler was plagued by fouls and scored only four points.

Christine Rumfola scored 16 points for Burbank. Jennifer Gomez added 13 and Karrie Parsons had 11 points. Louisville held Burbank’s leading scorer, Christy Calderon, to eight points. Calderon made only 4 of 19 field goal attempts.

Louisville plays Palos Verdes, which defeated Palm Springs, 50-33, in a quarterfinal game Saturday.

Alemany 59, Hacienda Heights Wilson 54--Millie Junio scored 21 points for Alemany in the second round game at Wilson. Junio made seven of 10 shots and was 3 for 3 from the free throw line in the first half as Alemany built up a 31-20 lead at intermission. Alemany (21-5) led 12-10 after one quarter, then outscored Wilson 19-10 in the second quarter. Jennifer Kroll added 12 points for Alemany, which plays Katella, a 64-52 winner over El Toro, in a quarterfinal game Saturday.

Stephanie Coons scored 21 points and Allison Kuruma had 17 for Wilson (19-6), which outscored Alemany, 20-14, in the fourth quarter but fell short.

SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION

Holy Martyrs at Maricopa--The game was postponed because of snow and will be played at 3 p.m. today.

City Section

3-A DIVISION

North Hollywood 65, South Gate 38--Senior Debbie Herz scored 14 points and Sandrine Rocher added 13 for North Hollywood, which won its 13th straight game. North Hollwood (17-2) opened the game with a 9-2 spurt and led, 32-15, at halftime. Sophomore Michelle Cabaldon came off the bench to score nine points for North Hollywood. Center Bridgette Eaves scored 14 points for South Gate (13-8).

North Hollywood plays Lincoln, a 50-44 winner over University, in a quarterfinal game Friday.

Reseda 68, San Pedro 55--Dana Jones scored a game-high 33 points for Reseda in the quarterfinal game at San Pedro. Reseda (14-2) led the entire game and had a 19-point lead during the third quarter. Cheryl Hightower scored 13 points for Reseda and Aggie Garcia had nine rebounds.

Melissa Armijo scored 21 points, Kelly Holt added 13 and Maria Lourds had 11 points for San Pedro.

Reseda plays Garfield, which defeated Venice, 45-39, in a quarterfinal game Friday.
