College Baseball : Aztec Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short

San Diego State rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, but stranded two runners with one out Friday to give Pomona a 4-3 victory in a nonconference baseball game at Smith Field.

SDSU’s Brian Solari opened the inning with a single. Curt Lewis drove in a run with a double and Nicko Riesgo narrowed the lead to 4-3 with a two-run triple. But with one out and Riesgo on third, the Aztecs were stopped.

Pomona’s Charlie Webb, who had a one-hitter going into the ninth, pitched a complete game. Webb (3-0) struck out 13.

SDSU (6-6) has lost five straight. Pomona (7-7) was led by designated hitter Jim Gomez, who was 2 for 5 with two runs batted in.

Pepperdine 7, University of San Diego 3--Craig Stiveson (1-0) pitched a complete game, striking out six, in the West Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams at San Diego. Chris Bwy was 2 for 3 for the Toreros (1-0, 9-3). Peter Kuld was 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Pepperdine (1-0, 10-3-2).

UC San Diego 7, Cal State San Bernardino 4--Brian Rude’s three-run homer in the fifth gave UCSD a 6-0 lead en route to the NCAA Division III victory at San Diego. Rick Nowak (5-0) pitched seven innings. UCSD (2-0, 6-5) was led by Bob Natal (2 for 2, including a double) and J.J. Fisher (2 for 3).

Cal State Northridge 9, Point Loma Nazarene 2--Jeremy Hernandez (2-1) pitched a complete game at Point Loma to extend Northridge’s win streak to seven. Point Loma (4-5) had solo homers by Curtis Burton and Steve Rons. Northridge is 11-4.
