COLLEGE SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Fresno’s Double Triple Helps Rip CSUN, 11-3

Scott Bleckman had three triples and drove in three runs as Fresno State routed Cal State Northridge, 11-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Fresno State.

Northridge starter Dan Penner was hit hard for six runs in the third inning and he gave up eight runs in 5 innings. Penner (3-2) gave up seven hits, allowed eight runs and struck out four. He also walked five.

Len Gilmore and Craig Burns hit home runs for Northridge (10-5). Gilmore hit a two-run homer, his second, in the eighth, and Burns hit a solo homer, his third, in the fifth.

John Salles (4-1) went the distance for Fresno State (9-6), the 20th-ranked team in NCAA Division I. Salles struck out six, gave up six hits, walked one and gave up three earned runs.

BASEBALL

Master’s 8, Cal Lutheran 5--Chris Hernandez went 2 for 3 and had the game winning-hit on a two-run double in the fourth inning. Tim Kane went 2 for 4 as Master’s (8-3, 6-1 in NAIA District III) sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run fourth inning. Cal Lutheran is 2-6, and 1-4 in the district.

Valley 11, Mission 10--Mission outhit Valley, 15-9, but lost the Southern California Conference opener at home.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 11-2, UC San Diego 4-2--Dee Pilkington had a big day at the plate and on the mound as Cal Lutheran (2-3) split a nonconference doubleheader with UC San Diego at home.

Pilkington (1-1) pitched seven strong innings in the opener to record her first collegiate victory. The freshman from Carpinteria High struck out three and walked one. UC San Diego pitcher Jean Spelman helped the Regals, walking 10 batters.

Master’s 7, Southern California College 3--Mater’s pitcher Carolyn Waltman threw a five-hitter over seven innings and gave up only two earned runs and teammate Shelly Richardson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs at Southern California College.

Waltman aided her cause by getting two hits. Staci White also had two hits, and catcher Elizabeth Ellis threw out three runners. A second game was called because of darkness and will be continued April 4. Master’s is 1-4.

COLLEGE GOLF

Pat Boyd of Cal State Northridge tied for ninth in the individual standings and the Matadors finished seventh in the team standings at the Cal Sate Sacramento invitational at Sunset Whitney Gold Course in Sacramento. Boyd shot a 54-hole total of 228.

MEN’S TENNIS

John Freeman of Pierce won the No. 1 singles match and then teamed up with Mike Rosenthal to win the No.1 doubles match as Pierce defeated Moorpark, 9-0, in a nonconference tennis match. Freeman defeated Hans Lemus 6-1, 6-0 and Freeman and Rosenthal defeated Brent Armbruster and Stewart Limbert, 6-2, 6-0 in the doubles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Kelley Gratton won the No.1 singles match and as Cs Northridge defeated defeated UC Riverside, 9-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match on Tuesday.
