San Diego High School Baseball : Carroll’s Two Home Runs Lead Granite Hills to 5-4 Win

Senior Donnie Carroll hit two home runs to lead Granite Hills to a 5-4 victory over Escondido Tuesday in the Hilltop tournament at Granite Hills.

Carroll’s second home run broke a 4-4 tie leading off the bottom of the sixth. Carroll had hit a two-run shot in the fourth to give Granite Hills (1-0) a 4-2 lead. Escondido (0-1) tied the score in the fifth when Rick Afenir doubled in two runs.

Sophomore Brian Giles, making his high school debut, hit the first pitch thrown to him for a home run to give Granite Hills a 1-0 lead.

Nick Scales gave up both of Carroll’s home runs and took the loss. George Bishop struck out eight and allowed two earned runs to gain the victory.

Also in the Hilltop tournament:

El Capitan 12, St. Augustine 4--Rich Gonsalves hit a three-run home run and Jerry Aldridge was 2 for 3 with three runs at El Capitan (1-0). Rob Arnold struck out nine in five innings for the victory.

CRAWFORD TOURNAMENT

University City 7, Crawford 3--Deron Thornton had two RBIs to lead University City at Crawford. Thornton hit a two-run single in a four-run third inning. Brian Sexton was 2 for 3 with a home run, and Mario Aquino gave up two hits in four innings to save the game for Randy Lohrenz (1-0). Manny Gagliano was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Crawford (0-1).

Morse 9, Christian 5-- Derwin Proby’s two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie at Morse. Proby, who was 3 for 4, drove in Mike Smith and Cesar Guzman. Dave Vasquez gave up one run in five innings for the victory.

Serra 6, La Jolla 4--Ronnie Lardizabel hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie at La Jolla. Lardizabel, who had four RBIs, also pitched the last two innings to earn the victory. Brent Woodall was 3 for 3 with an RBI for La Jolla (0-1).
