San Diego High School Baseball : San Dieguito Comes Back to Win, 5-4

Share

San Dieguito High School’s baseball season opener Thursday seemed dismal as the host Mustangs entered the bottom of the seventh trailing San Pasqual, 4-0, in a Goodman-Pirate Tournament game.

Chris Barr brightened a few faces on the San Dieguito bench when he led off the inning with a home run. The mood became decidedly more upbeat as San Dieguito used a single, a fielder’s choice, an error and two walks to make the score 4-3 with runners on first and third.

But it wasn’t until Cameron Mathy singled to drive in the tying and winning runs that the Mustangs’ opener became an occasion for celebration, not consolation.

“It was a good come-from-behind win,” San Dieguito Coach Darold Nogle said of the 5-4 victory. “We really needed it.”

Winning pitcher Charlie Chittim (1-0) was the beneficiary of San Dieguito’s rally. Kelly Simpson was the losing pitcher for San Pasqual.
