Community College Roundup : Ruiz’s 3 Hits Lead Mt. SAC Over Fullerton, 6-3

Gaspar Ruiz went 3 for 4, including a double, to lead Mt. San Antonio College over Fullerton, 6-3, Friday in a South Coast Conference baseball game at Mt. SAC.

Jamie Davenport (4-1) earned the win for Mt. SAC (4-2, 11-2). Fullerton (5-1, 9-4-2) was led by Tim Churchill, who went 2 for 4, including a triple, and had two RBIs.

Pitcher Mark Kiefer (2-2) took the loss.

In men’s Orange Empire Conference track:

Rancho Santiago 83, Saddleback 62--Brian Fisher pole vaulted 15 feet 2 inches to win the event with a personal best and help lead Rancho Santiago to its second conference victory at Saddleback. Rancho Santiago’s Cleveland Adams won the 100-meter dash in 10.9 seconds and anchored both the 400-meter relay team, which won at 42.3 seconds, and the 1,600-meter relay, which won in 3:21.6. Saddleback (1-1) was led by John Cronin. He won the 1,500 meters in 3:58.3 and the 800 meters in 1:53.7. Saddleback’s Darren Wallsmith high jumped 6-feet 8-inches.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Saddleback 12, Cypress 2--Kelly Thomas hit a grand slam in the third inning to lead the rout at Saddleback. Saddleback is 3-1, 17-2. Patty Taylor (12-1) pitched a complete-game five-hitter with 10 strikeouts to record the win for Saddleback.

In South Coast Conference softball:

Golden West 1, Pasadena 0 (10 innings)--Kelli Winkler doubled in pinch runner Cheryl McKirnan from second base with two out in the second inning to lead the Rustlers at home. Karen Nakamaru held the Lancers to six hits through 10 innings to improve her record to 4-3. The Rustlers are 15-5, 2-0. Pasadena is 1-1, 7-7. Winkler finished 3 for 5 on the day.

In men’s golf:

Saddleback 385, San Bernardino Valley College 391, Mt. SAC 426--John Adams shot a two-over-par 74 to lead Saddleback College to the victory at El Rancho Verde Golf Course in San Bernardino.

In women’s Orange Empire Conference track:

Saddleback 48, Rancho Santiago 21--Saddleback’s Michelle Stevens won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.5, the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.8 and the triple jump at 35 feet to lead Saddleback (2-0) at home. Rancho Santiago is 0-2.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Orange Coast College 3, L.A. Pierce 1-- Brian Lewis had 22 kills and Paul Cook added 19 to lead the Pirates (7-0, 11-1) to a 15-6, 10-15, 15-10, 15-9 victory at home. Charles Cutenese had 27 assists for OCC.

Golden West 3, La Verne 0--Tim Johnson had 12 kills and Todd Hanson had 9 to lead the Rustlers (5-1) to a 15-7, 15-7, 15-8 victory at La Verne.
