A 4-year-old Spring Valley girl suffered fatal head injuries Tuesday afternoon when the car she was sitting in was hit from behind by a pickup truck on Interstate 8 near Japatul Road in Alpine.

Priscilla LeBaron was pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Her mother, Rebecca, who was driving, and her brother, Isias, were listed in fair condition at UC San Diego Medical Center. A fourth passenger, Mathilda LeBaron, age 7, was taken to Children’s Hospital, where authorities would not release her condition.

According to San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Kelly, the four members of the LeBaron family were seated in their car, parked on the shoulder of Interstate 8 at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, when the westbound truck crashed into the rear of the car. The accident occurred one mile east of Japatul Road.

Priscilla LeBaron, who was a passenger in the rear seat, was taken to AMI Valley Medical Center in El Cajon and transported to Sharp Hospital by Life Flight helicopter before she was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.
