COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Edges Chapman on Gilmore’s Bloop Hit
The line on Lenn Gilmore will show he had two home runs among his three hits Tuesday, but it was his two-run bloop single in the ninth inning that allowed Cal State Northridge to defeat Chapman, 15-14, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Matador Field.
The teams combined for 34 hits, including seven home runs.
Robert Wheatcroft, Northridge’s third pitcher, was credited with the victory even though his third pitch was hit for a two-run homer by Darren Nelson. Nelson’s blast, his sixth this season, gave Chapman a 14-13 lead in the top of the ninth.
Northridge (17-8, 4-2 in conference) won the game in the bottom of the inning when Gilmore was jammed by a Steve Dunn fastball but managed to loop a single to short left field to score Scott McIntyre and Pierre Rodnunsky.
