COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Kubiak Fifth in Consolation Swim Final
Cal State Northridge’s Jeff Kubiak, a five-time Division II champion, finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke consolation race Saturday night at the NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships at the University of Texas.
Kubiak finished in 2:01.5--almost two seconds slower than he went at the Division II championships last month in Long Beach. John VanSant of Army won the event in 1:57.65. Kubiak finished 13th in the morning’s qualifying races.
BASEBALL
Frank Mutz (5-2) pitched a complete game and had four runs batted in as The Master’s defeatedSouthern California College, 15-3, to earn a split of a NAIA district III doubleheader at Southern California. Southern California won the first game, 5-4, in 11 innings . . . . Jim McDonald (6-3) went the distance and allowed only four hits as Pierce defeated Ventura, 7-4, to earn a split of the Western State Conference doubleheader at Pierce. Ventura won the first game, 22-9.
SOFTBALL
Debbie Dickman and Tracey Fox hurled shutouts Saturday for the Cal State Northridge softball team as the Lady Matadors swept a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader from Chapman.
