Minor Aftershock Hits Off Carlsbad

Another aftershock from last July’s earthquake off Oceanside was registered early Friday morning, measuring the same 3.8 on the Richter scale and occurring within four miles of the epicenter of an April 2 quake, according to a spokesman for the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

No injuries or damages were reported, and San Diego and Oceanside police said they received no calls about the quake, which struck at 1:25 a.m.

The quake was centered about 29 miles west-southwest of Oceanside, off Carlsbad, Caltech spokesman Bob Finn said. It was centered on the same fault line and is considered to be another in a long line of aftershocks from the July 13 quake, which registered 5.3 on the Richter scale and was the largest ever recorded off San Diego County.

Caltech figures a quake’s epicenter by using 100 various points in California. Although Friday’s quake was actually off Carlsbad, Oceanside was the closest of the points to this particular quake, Finn said.
