Orange County Prep Baseball : Orange Gives Banning a Tanning

Skip Tanner drove in three runs and also came on in the sixth to relieve Josh Hamilton (1-0) and help Orange High School defeat Banning, 7-6, in a first-round game of the Santa Ana Elks tournament Saturday at Hart Park in Orange.

Tanner, who was 2 for 4, doubled in the first inning to score two of the Panthers’ three runs in the inning.

Emilio Avila had two hits and an RBI for Orange (10-4 overall).

In other Elks tournament games:

Villa Park 10, Locke 2--Trent Eye hit a three-run homer in the first and Tim Keller added a two-run homer in the fifth at Villa Park as the Spartans improved their record to 8-7. John Watrous, who won his second game in three starts, gave up only three hits before being relieved by Kyle Snailum in the sixth.

Long Beach Millikan 7, Laguna Hills 0--Craig Kendall struck out 11 batters and allowed only three hits at Villa Park. Millikan (9-5) broke the game open in the second inning, scoring five runs.

Mission Viejo 14, Santa Ana Valley 2--Tied at 2-2, the game was turned into a blowout at Hart Park when Santa Ana Valley committed five errors, pitcher Darryl Lievanos walked four batters and the Diablos scored nine runs. Mission Viejo improved its record to 8-3, and Santa Ana Valley fell to 6-7.

Foothill 8, Long Beach Jordan 6--The Knights overcame a 4-2 deficit after three innings with a four-run flurry in the fourth at Rancho Santiago College. Adam Chambers was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Doug Kopcha was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Foothill.

El Toro 8, Los Alamitos 1--The Chargers scored eight runs in the fourth on the strength of four hits, three walks and two Los Alamitos errors at Rancho Santiago. Rick Bonner and John Shoffeit both singled, accounting for El Toro’s only two RBIs. Danny Goodbrand was the winner; Rob Nen took the loss.

Fontana 3, Saddleback 1--Winning pitcher Chris Hancock (2-0) allowed only five hits and Greg Colbrunn hit a two-run homer in the first inning to lead Fontana at Santa Ana High. Saddleback scored its lone run in the fifth.

Irvine 6, Santa Ana 5--The Vaqueros broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh to win at Santa Ana High. Kevin Oberfell was the winning pitcher and Robert Reimers took the loss. Irvine was led by Brian Brocoff and Jim Enochs, who had three hits each. Ray Lopez and Oscar Luna had three hits apiece for Santa Ana.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 8, Pius X 7--The host Monarchs led, 8-1, going into the seventh, and reliver Tony Pena got two strikeouts with the bases loaded for the final outs. Eric Weight was 1 for 3 with a home run and Brad Neglia was 1 for 1 with a three-run home run for Mater Dei (5-2, 9-5).

Bishop Amat 6, Servite 5--Reliever Todd Cook threw a bases-loaded wild pitch in the seventh inning as the Lancers (5-1, 11-2) won at home. Servite (5-1, 10-2) had tied the score at 5-5 in the seventh on a two-run home run by Tom Szymanski.

In the first round of the West Anaheim Lions tournament:

La Quinta 7, Woodbridge 6--Mike Wilson allowed a two-run homer in the sixth at Glover Field but regained his composure to keep his record perfect at 8-0.

Paul Rodriguez, the ninth batter in the Woodbridge lineup, was responsible for the homer, which put the Warriors ahead, 6-5. He finished the day with four RBIs. La Quinta, however, was able to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win.

Mark Dion hit a three-run homer in the first to give La Quinta (13-1)the lead. On the day he was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Westminster 2, University 1--Al Rodriguez hit a fifth-inning double, scoring Dean Eddy to help Westminster to the win at Glover. Brian Stubbs, who went the distance for the Lions, won his six game in seven starts. Darrell Sawicki took the loss.

Westminster took the lead in the third on a bases-loaded walk.

The Lions improve to 11-2-1 overall, and University falls to 5-9-1.

Western 8, Apple Valley 3--Mark Holiday pitched a four-hitter and Mario Juarez drove in two runs to key the Western win. Western’s Brian Nauenberg was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Western is 10-5; Apple Valley suffered only its second loss in 11 games.

Canyon 5, Troy 3--Joe Furukawa’s fifth-inning single scored two runs, breaking a 3-3 deadlock. Chris Rodwick was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. John Cummings (4-2) struck out seven to pick up the win. Cummings relieved Mike Rice in the fourth after the starter allowed all three Troy runs.
