San Diego College Baseball : Martinez Lifts Aztecs Over Wyoming, 7-6

Danny Martinez’s double to left with two out in the eighth inning drove in the tying and winning runs as San Diego State beat Wyoming, 7-6, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday at SDSU.

Mike Mulvaney put the Cowboys (4-3, 18-11) ahead in the fifth with a three-run home run. Mulvaney came up in the ninth with two out and a man on first, but relief pitcher Matt Haar (2-1) struck him out for the victory.

SDSU improves to 4-4 and 22-18-1.

UC San Diego 2-14, Master’s 3-6--UC San Diego committed three errors in a 3-2 loss to the Master’s College in the opening game of a nonconference doubleheader at Newhall. The Tritons rallied behind four home runs in the second game for a 14-6 victory.

In the opener, UCSD’s Rick Nowak (6-3) pitched a three-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run, but Master’s Kevin Taylor (5-2) got a complete-game victory.

Bob Natal had a pair of two-run home runs in the second game to pace the Tritons (18-11). UCSD’s five-run fourth was highlighted by Gary Fessia’s three-run homer and a solo homer by Derek Alkonis. Master’s is 18-16.

University of San Diego 9-0, Santa Clara 2-15--Mark Trafton led host USD in the first game of the West Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with a single, a double and a home run, with four runs scored and two RBIs.

Troy Buckley paced Santa Clara in the second game, driving in six runs with a grand slam, a single and a sacrifice fly. USD is 6-10-1 and 23-16-1. Santa Clara is 8-8-1 and 21-20-1.

United States International 18-3, Southern Utah State 6-5--John Ronis of USIU went 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead host USIU in the first game of the nonconference doubleheader.

In the second game, Mike Ryser and Dan Kelshaw homered for Southern Utah State (15-15). USIU is 22-23-1.
