The State : Hayward Fault Peril Cited
State officials have concluded that the Hayward Fault poses a bigger earthquake threat to San Franciscans than the San Andreas Fault. A report written by the state Division of Mines and Geology notes that the Hayward Fault is probably the world’s most heavily built-upon major active fault. A Hayward Fault quake registering 7.5 on the Richter scale would wreak more damage to the Bay Area than the devastating 8.3 quake on the San Andreas Fault in 1906, the report said. It predicted that a 7.5 quake on the Hayward Fault would kill 1,000 to 4,500 people and hospitalize 3,000 to 12,000.
