Second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden was upset by countryman Ulf Stenlund Wednesday in the second round of the $513,000 Monte Carlo Open tennis tournament. Stenlund downed Edberg, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Edberg followed top-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany and defending champion Joakim Nystrom of Sweden to the sidelines. Becker and Nystrom lost Tuesday.

Against Edberg, winner of four tournaments this year and ranked No. 3 in the world, Stenlund stayed at the baseline and rarely ventured to the net while Edberg made numerous unforced errors as the match progressed. Stenlund, 20, is ranked 32nd in the world.
