A Top Jockey Is as Tough to Pick as a Top Horse

Picking future champion jockeys has proven to be just as difficult as picking champion horses. Each year a new crop of shooting stars comes along, most of them likely to disappear back into the crowd. When you look back at the apprentice champions from the past 10 years, only two, Steve Cauthen and Cash Asmussen, have stuck. We don’t have one jockey now under 30 who has won a national championship.

Who will be the champions in the next decade? The “will” and “skill” required to become a champion jockey are just as hard to forecast as those for a champion horse.
