A Sunland resident shot and killed a man armed with a bayonet and a toy gun who attacked him in his home Friday night, Los Angeles police said.

After the man demanded money, jewelry and narcotics, Collins got his .12-gauge shotgun and shot the man twice in the chest.

The 30-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld until relatives are notified, had entered Collins’ house through an unlocked door, Fine said. He had a plastic replica of a semiautomatic pistol in addition to the bayonet, police said.

Collins was treated for the knife wounds by paramedics. The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.
