Fire at the Orange County Register in Santa Ana caused more than $100,000 damage and disrupted telephone lines and newsroom computers. Reporters and editors produced the afternoon edition at the Anaheim Bulletin, a sister paper. About 110 workers were evacuated after a security guard discovered the fire at 4:20 a.m. in a basement paper storage area at 625 N. Grand Ave. An estimated 175 rolls of newsprint--worth $500 each--were damaged, but computers and phones were working by noon. Another fire, believed started by a smoker, occurred in the same spot July 31, 1984. The cause of the latest fire was unknown, fire officials said.
