Robert O. Clements, 69; L.A. Architect

Robert O. Clements Sr., head of the 119-year-old architectural firm that designed more than 110 buildings on Wilshire Boulevard alone, died Monday at his Pasadena home of cancer. He was 69.

Son of Stiles O. Clements, he took over the Pasadena firm in 1965 when his father retired and oversaw the building of several banks and savings and loans, the Park La Brea Shopping Center, the Pershing Square garage, the Carnation Office Building/Restaurant, Mullen-Bluett Department Store, the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Elysian Park and several stores for Sears and Montgomery Ward and markets for Ralphs, Hughes, Safeway and Vons.

Clements was a founder of the Architectural Guild of USC where he received his degree in architecture, was a former president of the Guild Opera and a member of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, a daughter, two sons and six grandchildren.
