Titans Split Doubleheader, Face Fresno for Title
Cal State Fullerton split a doubleheader with Cal State Long Beach Saturday at Fullerton, so the Titans will have to make up a rained-out game with second-place Fresno State at noon today at Fullerton, with the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball championship on the line.
Fullerton (31-4, 55-7) won the first game Saturday, 2-0, as senior Connie Clark (29-2) pitched a three-hitter and struck out five. Lisa Baker doubled in a run in the first inning and freshman first baseman Missy Coombes added two hits for the Titans.
In the second game, Long Beach shortstop Carla Williams, who played for Fullerton High School and Fullerton College, hit two home runs to lead the 49ers (23-11, 32-18) to a 7-3 victory. Chris Gage (10-2) took the loss for Fullerton. Kim Martin (14-9), who pitched for Rancho Santiago College, had a complete-game victory.
If Fullerton beats Fresno State (30-5 in the PCAA) today, it will win the conference title outright. If Fresno State wins, the teams will tie for the championship, and the Bulldogs would get the automatic berth on a tiebreaker.
The winner of today’s game earns an automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs.
