Brush Fire Threatens Homes, Chars 300 Acres in Val Verde

A fast-moving brush fire Thursday burned 300 acres in Val Verde and threatened 20 houses and 113 mobile homes before it was contained at 8 p.m., Los Angeles County firefighters said.

About 225 firefighters battled the flames and three helicopters dropped more than 300 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, which began about 3:30 p.m., Fire Chief Gordon Pearson said.

The 300 residents of the Hasley Canyon Mobile Home Park were told they might be evacuated and were advised to gather valued possessions. Although the fire came within several yards, neither the residents of the park nor 20 families across a canyon were forced to evacuate.

While the residents waited to hear whether they would have to leave, Betty Brault, who has lived in the mobile home park for seven years, gathered her three dogs and two cats.

“The most important thing is getting the animals out,” she said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Pearson said.
