Orange County Roundup : Fairgrounds Cyclist Field Enhanced by Ermolenko

Speedway motorcyclist Sam Ermolenko, who finished third in the 1985 world championship at Bradford, England, will return for one night of racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds beginning at 8 tonight.

Ermolenko, of Cypress, rides for Wolverhampton of the British Speedway League and will be joined by teammate Ronnie Correy of Fullerton. Correy, 19, recently was successful in his first qualifying round for the world junior championship.

Locally, two riders--Mike Faria and Bobby Schwartz--have won two scratch main events in five weeks of racing at the Fairgrounds. Schwartz had won 13 of 20 scratch main events on the Southland circuit entering this week’s competition.

The U.S. women’s national team handball squad will meet the West German national team in a two-game match beginning at 7:30 tonight in Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym.

The U.S. team, featuring Olympic stars Sam Jones and Cindy Stinger, also will play the West Germans on Saturday night at the same starting time. The U.S. team is coached by Mishi Faludi of Hungary.

The Associated Students of Orange Coast College and the Parents Club will play host to the third annual Tribute Run at William R. Mason Park in Irvine at 7 a.m. Saturday.

There will 5K and 10K runs. The race day entry fee is $10, which includes a shirt and breakfast, and $7 for the run and breakfast only.

The Newport Cannery Outrigger Canoe Race, with men’s and women’s competition, will be held Saturday starting at 18th Street Beach in Newport Beach.

More than 100 entries from California and Hawaii will paddle to the Balboa Pier and back, with the women finishing at 18th street and the men finishing at the Cannery Restaurant on the Lido Peninsula.

The women’s race will begin at 8 a.m., and the men’s race at 10:30 a.m.

The race, sponsored by the Newport Outrigger Club, is open to spectators.

A fund-raising luau will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall at 15th Street in Newport Beach. Polynesian food and dance will be featured as well as a live band in the evening. Tickets are $18, and proceeds will go toward funding the Newport Outrigger Club’s participation in the 1987 Molokai Channel Race in Hawaii this summer.

Des Flood’s Basketball Shooting Camp, for junior high, high school and college players, will be held in two week-long sessions, June 22-26 and June 29-July 3, at Anaheim’s Western High School.

The camp, open to boys and girls, will run from 9 a.m. to noon daily, with a question-and-answer session for interested parents and coaches preceding each day’s workouts. Price per session is $100, and enrollment is limited. For registration information, call 827-9927, 826-4872 or (213) 860-0019.
