Viewpoint/ Letters : Honist to Gunnist, It’s a Shootist

I used to be a tail-gunner on a B-17 bomber, romantically called a Flying Fortress. I wonder if I should say gunnist, now that shooters are being called shootists (“Going Great Guns,” May 11).

Should bombers be called bombists? Hitters hittists? Passers passists? Pitchers pitchists? Catchers catchists? Readers readists? Writers writists? I wonderist.
