Apartment Fire Kills 2 Mothers, 4 Children

A smoky fire swept through a crowded basement apartment early today, killing two mothers and four of their children and leaving another child in critical condition, fire officials said.

The fire broke out in a bedroom of the basement apartment that had only one exit and there were no smoke detectors in the apartment, officials said.
