Orange County Roundup : Cook Heads the Field at Speedway

John Cook, a veteran British Speedway League rider, will compete at 8 tonight in racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. Cook rode for the Ipswich Witches on the overseas circuit for four seasons.

Cook is the points leader at Auburn and Baylands in Northern California and has become one of the top stars in pro jet skiing, having won the slalom event in an Oceanside race last Sunday.

Defending U.S. champion Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa has dominated the Southland circuit. Schwartz has won 17 of 22 scratch main events this season, including three of six main events at Costa Mesa.

Gates open at 6:30, with the first heat race scheduled for 8.

Orange County high school basketball stars LeRon Ellis of Mater Dei, Mark Georgeson of Marina, Ricky Butler of Ocean View, Vince Bryan of Woodbridge and Mike Herring of Irvine will play for the U.S. team against a touring Soviet Union junior national team at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Cerritos College gymnasium.

Tickets, $8 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children, are available through Ticketmaster. Proceeds will benefit Athletes for Academic Success.

Registration is open for the 13th Score Girls Basketball Camp, scheduled for Aug. 2-7 in Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym.

Maryalyce Jeremiah, the Titan women’s coach, and Mel Sims will serve as the camp directors. Tuition is $280 for live-in campers and $230 for day campers with a $100 deposit required. For further information, call 961-0466.

Entries are being accepted for the fifth annual Vince Ferragamo Special Olympics Celebrity Golf Classic on June 2 at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park.

Ferragamo, a former Ram quarterback, will be joined by former Ram teammates along with Hollywood celebrities. The event will benefit the Special Olympics.

The Orange County Women’s Soccer League “A” Division is holding tryouts for its fall season team.

Players should be at least 21, have good soccer skills, and a minimum of five years’ playing experience.

The second annual Oaks Classic, an equestrian jumping show awarding more than $70,000 in prize money, will be held May 30 and 31 at The Oaks off Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano.

Events in the competition will include a $1,500 Junior-Amateur Welcome Stake, a $5,000 Dash for Cash Speed Stake, a $6,000 Open Jumper Welcome Stake and a $50,000 Oaks Granprix.
