Top-seeded Chris Evert was leading Kate Gompert, 3-1, when rain halted their match. It will be continued today. In other matches, third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Susan Sloane, 6-3, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Lori McNeil beat Halle Cioffi, 7-5, 6-3.
John McEnroe downed Martin Jaite, 6-4, 6-1, and Brad Gilbert overcame Guillermo Vilas, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, to give the United States a 2-0 victory over Argentina in the World Team Cup tournament at Dusseldorf, West Germany.
Spain ousted defending champion France when Emilio Sanchez upset Henri Leconte, 6-4, 6-3, and Sergio Casal beat Thierry Tulasne.
