Kevin Franklin of Taft High, The Times Valley basketball Player of the Year, will compete on a team of Southland all-stars in a game against the Soviet Union junior men’s national team at 6 p.m. Sunday at Cerritos College.

Franklin will join LeRon Ellis of Mater Dei, Sean Higgins of Fairfax, Mark Georgeson of Marina, Ronnie Coleman of Dominguez and Ricky Butler of Ocean View.

The Soviet team, on the final leg of a 10-game tour of the U.S., features 6-10 Igor Pinchuk and 6-8 Elshar Gadashev.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for high school students with ID cards and $3 for children under 12.

Middleweight Larry Musgrove (7-7, six knockouts) of Los Angeles will try to avenge a loss two years ago to Ricky Locke (8-12, four knockouts) of Bakersfield when the two meet in Tuesday night’s 10-round main event at the Reseda Country Club. Locke beat Musgrove in 1985 via an eight-round decision.

Featherweight Dino Garza of Granada Hills will attempt to keep his perfect mark (4-0, all by knockout) intact against Armando Baeza (6-2-1, four knockouts) of Norwalk in a five-round bout.

Also on Tuesday’s card: Light heavyweight Nate Houser (2-0, one knockout) of Beverly Hills against Manny Murillo (3-3, three knockouts) of Miami in a five-round bout; Abe Gomez (2-0) of Pacoima against Rodolfo Perez (4-0-1, three knockouts) of Temple City in a four-round junior featherweight bout; Bruce Pearson (7-1-1, two knockouts) of Los Angeles against David R. Guerra (7-10-1, five knockouts) of San Diego in a four-round junior welterweight match; and Alex Morfin against Fernando Garcia in a four-round featherweight fight, the first pro bout for both Los Angeles fighters.

The first fight is scheduled for 8 p.m.

These are the matchups for the City Section 4-A softball quarterfinals which will be played Wednesday:

Chatsworth at El Camino Real, 2:45 p.m.

San Fernando at San Pedro, 2:45 p.m.

Narbonne at Sylmar, 2:30 p.m.

Kennedy vs. Banning at Dolphin Park, 2:45 p.m.

Today is the deadline for teams to register for an over-the-line charity hardball tournament on June 6-7 at Pierce College.

The tournament is sponsored by the League for International Funding Emergencies, a non-profit organization that provides logistical and transportation systems to support the movement of goods, services and personnel to areas of need.

Tryouts for the Southern California Hebrew youth basketball team will be held May 31 at 10 a.m. at Montclair Prep High in Van Nuys.

Boys 16-and-under are eligible for the team that will compete in August at the Junior Maccabi Games in Chicago.

More than 600 Arabian horses are scheduled to compete in the Silver Anniversary Show of the San Fernando Valley Arabian Horse Assn. that ends Sunday at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara.

More than $56,000 in prize money will be awarded to winners in the Futurity and Show competitions, who will become eligible to compete in regional and national finals.

The show also offers nationally sanctioned competition in halter and performance classes, including hunter-jumper, junior exhibitor and amateur owner classes.
