Former heavyweight champion Pinklon Thomas says it will be the intensity of his punches, not those of Mike Tyson, that determine who will win their May 30 heavyweight title fight.

Thomas said last week the punching power that has given him 24 KOs in 31 professional fights, will make the difference against the undefeated champion.

“No man, no matter how great he is, can take a rap like I’ll give him,” Thomas said. “My punches will have something on them.”

Thomas will be attempting to win back his World Boxing Council title plus the World Boxing Assn. version of the title against Tyson, who holds both titles and is 29-0 with 26 KOs.

Thomas lost his title in March 1986 when Trevor Berbick scored a 12-round decision against him. Berbick lost the title in November 1986 when Tyson knocked him out in the second round.

Thomas said he is mindful of Tyson’s power.

“I’m not eager to go in and rush it and take this guy out,” Thomas said. “I don’t plan to stand there and take his punches.”
